Principal’s Message

Welcome to Somis Elementary School! The teachers and staff at Somis Elementary School are here to help you learn and grow to be the best you can be!  We have purchased these student planners to help you get, and stay organized.   Here at Somis School, students, teachers, and families work together as a team.  Your teachers prepare your classroom learning environment, lessons, assessments, fieldtrips, and enrichment activities.  Your responsibility is to come to school EVERY DAY, ON TIME with your homework completed, your reading assignments done, study for tests, follow the Somis Pledge, be kind and always do your best.  We encourage parent involvement and we have many opportunities for you and your family to join other families for an evening of music, STEAM Family Nights, Science Fair, Authors Fair, Family Math Night, and much more.   We are so glad that you are here at Somis School!

Our Mission at Somis Elementary is to provide our children with the tools they need to learn about themselves and the world around them, to think critically, to communicate well with others, to be good problem solvers, and to be productive, educated, members of a global society.


Our society places great value on an educated population.  So much so that all students ages 6 to 18 are required by law to attend school. Coming to school every day and on time is critical for student success.  Parents can help their children be successful by making sure that they get to school on time. Students can help their families by being prepared in the morning.

Arrival and Departure

To ensure proper supervision and safety, children are to arrive at school no earlier than 7:45 a.m.  Supervision is provided from 7:45- 8:10 a.m. on the playground.  Students should line up on the blacktop at 8:10 a.m. when the first bell rings. No supervision is provided prior to 7:45 a.m. Teachers are on duty for only 10 minutes at the end of the school day.  Please be sure your child is picked up on time.  YMCA will be offering before and after school childcare this year. This is a fee based program.  Please contact the front office for further information or to pick up an application.

Returning after an Absence

Students are required to bring a note to school after an absence.  The note should list the DATE of absence, the REASON for absence, and must be SIGNED by a parent or guardian.  The note should be given to the classroom teacher or office secretary immediately upon returning to school.


Any student who is tardy in excess of 30 minutes, three or more times, without an acceptable  excuse may be regarded as habitually truant and may be reported to the School Attendance Review Board, (SARB).  Parents can be fined by SARB for excessive absences or tardies.

Early and regular dismissal

To maximize classroom learning please try to arrange for doctors and dentist appointments after school.  If a student needs to leave before dismissal time, he or she must be signed out in the office by a parent or guardian. At dismissal time students are expected to go directly home or to the location arranged for by parents and or guardians.


A nutritious breakfast and lunch are available daily for all students.  A monthly menu will be sent home. At Somis School, breakfast is provided for free to all students.   Students can prepay their lunches either by cash or check.  The cost is $2.75 per day for full pay lunch. Reduced and free rates are available if you qualify. Lunch accounts should be kept current at all times.

The rules for eating in the cafeteria are:

1)  Talk quietly so that everyone can enjoy eating in a calm, relaxed atmosphere.  No running or horseplay.

2) Follow the directions of the adult supervisor.

3) Always be polite and use good table manners.

4)  Leave your place at the table as clean as possible when you are excused.

5)  Failure to follow the rules will result in the loss of a privilege.

Prohibited Foods

Gum and sunflower seeds present huge clean up problem to the custodians and to other pupils so are not allowed. In the interest of healthy eating, gum, and candy are not permitted.  Food is to be eaten during break time or lunch time only, and only in the cafeteria or the sack lunch area.  No soda or glass bottles should be sent to school.

Change of Address

We never know when an emergency will happen.  It is vitally important that the office always has the most current addresses and phone numbers.  Please report any changes of information immediately to the school Office Manager.

Clean School

The appearance of a school and the way it is kept has a great deal to do with the reputation of that school.  Somis Students are proud of their school and want it to be well cared for so that other people in the community will feel the pride.  It is the responsibility of each and every student to make sure that our campus stays clean. Bathrooms, library, cafeteria, playground, classrooms, and all other common areas should be shared respectfully.

Dress Code

The purpose of the dress code is to ensure that a student’s clothing and grooming will allow the student and others to learn and play safely and without distraction.  Students are expected to dress in clean clothing that is suitable for school.  Girls are not allowed to wear short shorts or spaghetti straps.  Underclothes should not be visible. No clothing that can be construed as gang related will be allowed at school.  Shirts that advertise drugs, alcohol or contain offensive messages will not be allowed. Jewelry should not be a distraction nor should it pose a danger (ie large hoop earrings). No sandals, open-toed shoes or skate shoes.    Hats may be worn outside only.  Any wording or symbols on the hat must be appropriate for school. The principal or designee will determine the appropriateness of any item of clothing, jewelry, or hats.

Student Code of Conduct


One of the main purposes of a school is to encourage students to take responsibility for their own conduct so they may become worthy citizens in a democracy and be a credit to themselves, their family, and their school.  Somis School citizens are familiar with and obey school rules and encourage others to be good friends.

Suspension or Expulsion

Students may be suspended from school for the following reasons:

  1. Caused, attempted or threatened to cause physical injury to another person, except in self-defense.
  2. Possessed, sold or otherwise furnished any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object.
  3. Unlawfully possessed, used, sold or furnished, or been under the influence of, any controlled substance, alcoholic beverage or intoxicant of any kind.
  4. Unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any controlled substance, alcoholic beverage or intoxicant of any kind, and then either sold, delivered or otherwise furnished anything in lieu of it or represented the replacement as a controlled substance, alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant.
  5. Committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion.
  6. Caused or attempted to cause damage to school property or private property.
  7. Stole or attempted to steal school property or private property.
  8. Possessed or used tobacco, or any products containing tobacco or nicotine products, or smokeless cigarette products.
  9. Committed an obscene act or engaged in habitual profanity or vulgarity.
  10. Had unlawful possession of, or unlawfully offered, arranged, or negotiated to sell any drug paraphernalia.
  11. Disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of school officials or other school personnel.
  12. Knowingly received stolen school property or private property.
  13. Possessed an imitation firearm.
  14. Committed or attempted to commit a sexual assault, or committed a sexual battery, as defined in the Penal Code.
  15. Harassed, threatened, or intimidated a pupil who is a complaining witness or witness in a school disciplinary proceeding.
  16. Committed sexual harassment.
  17. Caused or attempted to cause, threatened to cause, or participated in an act of hate violence.
  18. Engaged in harassment, threats, or intimidation.
  19. Terroristic threats against school officials or school property, or both.

(Education Code sections 48900, 48900.2, 48900.3, 48900.4, and 48900.7)

Prohibited Items

Students may not possess the following items on school property or at school events without the explicit permission of a teacher or administrator.

  1. iPods, shuffles, CD Players, cameras, television sets, Gameboy-type portable games, laser pens, or any other electronic items of distraction.
  2. Gambling devices

3 Skateboards, rollerblades (inline skates) motorbikes or scooters.

Telephone/Cell Phones

Students may use the classroom telephone to inform parents or guardians if they are being kept after school, or to call for forgotten lunches, or instruments.  Please take care of routine family business before school (such as information about visits to a friend’s home, or game practice).  Parents and guardians phoning the school wishing to speak with their student’s teacher are requested to do so before and after school, so as not to interrupt the instructional day.  The office staff will take messages for teachers.  If a child brings a cell phone or SMART device to school it must remain in the backpack, TURNED OFF, once the student is on the school grounds UNLESS the teacher has instructed the student otherwise. The school will not assume responsibility for lost or stolen cell phones or any other electronic devices brought to school.


Bicycles must be locked to the bike rack. The school will not resume responsibility for unlocked bicycles.  Helmets should be worn per safety code.

Riding the Bus

If you ride the bus remember that safety is everyone’s responsibility.  You must follow the instructions of the bus driver at all times. Do not change seats or stand up until you are instructed to do so. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.  No drinking or eating allowed on the bus unless otherwise instructed by the bus driver.  Keep voices low so the bus driver can concentrate on the road.  No foul language or disrespectful behavior is allowed.   Riding the bus is a privilege that can be lost due to poor behavior.

Playground Rules

  1. Follow the directions of all adult supervisors.
  2. Play in the designated areas only. Do not play in the restrooms, hallways, or near classes that are in session.
  3. Children may not bring toys to school unless they receive prior permission from their teacher, and even with permission, do so at their own risk.
  4. Fighting, such as tackling, pushing, tripping, or other forms of physical contact, and throwing rocks or sand are not allowed.
  5. Swearing or using foul language is not permitted.
  6. Use the proper equipment for the appropriate game. Do not take equipment that you did not bring out at recess.
  7. Be careful, cautious, and courteous in using all playground equipment.
  8. Follow the rules of the game. New rules cannot be made up on a whim.
  9. Stop play when the bell rings and walk to the lineup area.


It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the bathrooms clean.  Please do not use the restrooms to play “Hide and Seek”, or as a place to hang out with your friends.  Never climb on the stalls or on ledges.  Standing on the toilet is dangerous and inappropriate.  Spraying, or splashing water, plugging toilets, sinks or drinking fountains to cause flooding and throwing wet toilet paper or towels in the bathroom is wasteful, unacceptable behavior that may be viewed as vandalism. Place paper towels in the trash cans.

Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom. Do not take toys, balls, or any writing instrument into the restrooms. The bathroom is not a place for rough play. Respect each other’s privacy. If any student notices someone improperly using the restroom, please report it to the office immediately. Remember to show your pride in our school by taking care of it.

Homework Policy

Homework assigned to students at Somis will be designed to reinforce and strengthen skills, already introduced by teachers. Each teacher will be sharing his/her own classroom homework policy with students and parents early in the school year.  We hope that you will pay special attention to the homework expectations, discuss them as a family, and make a commitment together to make sure homework is completed and returned promptly.  Homework can help students become independent and responsible learners. Parents can help their children do well on homework by:

  • Setting aside a specific area and time for homework.
  • Making sure the T.V., video games, and stereo are off.
  • Being available to answer questions.
  • Supporting your child.
  • Keeping regular contact with your child’s teacher.
  • Attending school functions whenever possible.

No Use Statement

Somis Union School District recognizes that the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco and the problems associated with these are becoming increasingly common in our society and among youth.  For that reason, we believe that a “no use” of alcohol, illegal drugs, and tobacco can often prevent the development of health problems.  We believe that it is in the best interest of the community to take steps to promote, enhance, and maintain a drug-free school system, and that the student body, along with parents and other segments of the community have a role to play in helping students remain drug-free.  No illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco or smoking related products are allowed on school grounds at any time.


What is bullying?

  • Bullying occurs when a person is the target, over time, of repeated hurtful actions.
  • Bullying occurs when there is an imbalance of power so that the victim has difficulty defending himself or herself.
  • Bullying may include verbal or physical attacks or gestures designed to provoke or hurt another person.

Research shows that the vast majority of students do not engage in bullying, but that most children experience bullying either as bystanders, targets or aggressors.  For a small number of students, there is an apparent disconnection between what they do and what they see as the effect of those actions.  Research also shows that some students miss school because of perceived threats or because they are worried about what may happen to them at school. This worry can lead to students losing interest in their studies and not doing homework to the best of their ability.


At Somis School we have adopted a highly rated anti-bullying program called OLWEUS. This program address the bully and the bystander and gives students the tools they need to speak up when they see bullying behavior occur.  Classroom meetings are conducted every week to encourage communication and teach empathy.  We want all children and staff to feel safe and secure at Somis School and we are committed to that goal.

The Four Olweus Anti-bullying rules


Somis School firmly believes that all students, staff, and faculty must have the right to work in an environment free from intimidation, bullying, and harassment because of sex, race, color, religion, handicap, national origin, new-student status, or physical attributes. The school prohibits all harassment and bullying, whatever the reason.  Students should report any type of harassment/bullying to his/her teacher or any other staff member.

All complaints brought to the principal’s attention will be promptly and fairly investigated.  Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if harassment/bullying are found to have occurred.  No one will be retaliated against for reporting questionable conduct.

Conduct is viewed as harassment/bullying when it affect or interferes  with a person’s right to dignity, respect, positive school performance, or when it creates an intimidating, unwelcome or hostile environment at school or during school events. Be mindful of inappropriate jokes, comments, on-line messaging, texting, videotaping/recording, touching, gossiping, and hurtful behaviors.  Somis School is dedicated to the value of RESPECT.

Technology Use Policy

Students are expected to use the technology and the Internet responsibly. Use of technology at school should be for school related purposes only unless given prior permission by a teacher for private use. Students must use all electronic devices in an appropriate, respectful manner and visitation to unapproved sites may result in the loss of use of electronic devices while on school grounds and during school functions. Accidental access must be reported immediately to the teacher or adult in charge.

This year Somis School will be focusing on the 21st century competencies of Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.
Our aim is to shift the culture of Somis School from a high achieving neighborhood school to an innovative STEAM campus that serves as a national model.
