Somis Students are STARS!

Dear Students, Families, and Community,

There is so much good new to share!  This year Somis Union School District had the largest gain in API of ALL the school districts in Ventura County.  We have increased our API by 62 points in just 2 years.  We are proud to be an 800 school with an API of 814!  This is a testament to the raised rigor of instruction and the hard work of our students and staff.  We have brought in new technology this summer with the addition of school-wide WiFi, iPads, new laptops, Apple TV, a new phone system, a new website, and a host of new Apps that will invigorate and accelerate the learning.  We provide full-day kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten is in full swing and we now have a waiting list. A delicious and nutritious breakfast is provided every morning to all children at no cost. We have a dedicated music teacher and music instruction for all ages.  Through amazing teacher leadership we have implemented the Olweus Anti-bullying Program across all grade levels.  All of our classrooms are single grade level which means no combination classes.   Small class sizes of approximately 20 students assure individualized attention to academic and social needs.  We have an excellent after school program that provides academic support, recreational sports, and enrichment activities such as dance, music, language, arts and crafts, and cultural studies, all at no cost to the families.  Through fundraising and the generous donations of the Somis School Foundation our students enjoy many experiences outside of the regular school day such as Washington D.C. for the 8th graders, an overnight excursion to the Long Beach Aquarium for the 7th graders, 3-4 day Outdoor School for 6th grade students, a trip to the Rosebowl, museums, music programs, plays, and a host of enriching experiences for all grade levels.    Our mission is to provide a world class education that challenges our students to use their minds to the fullest potential, and to be responsible stewards of the 21st century.

With the support of our wonderful community, teaching staff, and local businesses, Somis Union School District passed their first G.O. Bond in the November 2012, election.  This bond is estimated to bring in $9 million.  In addition we applied for, and received, another $4.5million from the state to help us with new construction costs.  Serious talks have begun about building a new school to meet the needs of our 21st century learners.  Though we love our current school site and it has served us well for almost 90 years, upgrades would cost us over $10,000,000 and that is with no new construction.  We will continue to keep you posted as plans develop.

We are working hard at Somis to be the “School of Choice” by providing a top quality education in a small, caring, and supportive environment.   All of our teachers are highly qualified, experienced, caring, and dedicated to providing the optimum learning experience for your child.

On behalf of the Somis Board of Trustees, teachers, and staff, we invite you to “Catch the Wave” at Somis School, your community school.
