Dear Somis Families,

I would like to welcome all of our new and returning families to the Somis Union School District, winner of the California Gold Ribbon Award and the Academic achievement Award in 2016. This year promises to be even better! We have record high new enrollment this year which has resulted in starting a brand new kindergarten class. We warmly welcome Mrs. Eleanor Barnett, an experienced kindergarten teacher, to join our Somis family of teachers. Also new to our campus this year is Mrs. Kristin Patterson, our enthusiastic P.E. Coach. Along with our quality core subjects of Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, Somis School is proud to provide Music and Art to all students at Somis School. Under the guidance of Mrs. Patricia Distad, artist from Studio Channel Islands will once again be guiding our budding artist to creative heights!

Our lunch program continues to improve. The Health and Wellness Committee which is comprised of parents and faculty is working hard to develop a garden program which ultimately will result in “farm to table” fresh produce for our school kitchen. The ASES program has returned and offers afterschool childcare for those children that can stay 15 hours per week. ASES is available to only 40 students and is offered at no cost. We also have partnered with the YMCA to offer before and after school childcare in a fee-based program. Please see Maria Gonzalez in the school office for more details.

We hope to see you at our Family STEAM Nights where the whole family is invited to share in hands-on fun with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. There are many opportunities for your involvement including Back to School Night, Harvest Festival, several musical productions, Author’s Fair, Saturday Parent Involvement Workshops, chaperoning, classroom parent, school volunteer and more.

Be sure to check out the monthly calendar that will be coming home with your son or daughter or log on to our website or follow us on twitter.

I know that by bringing your family to Somis School you are entrusting me, the teachers, and staff to give your child the very best education possible. We take that responsibility very seriously. Please feel free to call, email, or schedule a meeting whenever necessary. My door is open and I am here to serve you.

In Your Service,

Colleen Robertson, EdD
Somis School
